Originally named Mosquito County, the name Orange County was put into effect in 1845, the same year that the United States bought Florida from Spain. The name change was made because of the main fruit that the state is popular for. As a matter of fact, in the 1970’s, there were as many as 80,000 acres dedicated to growing oranges and other citrus fruits. With some of the problems with temperatures in the 1980’s, and many severe weather setbacks, there is not nearly as much in the fruit production within the county’s boundaries as there once was. Other thriving businesses and tourist attractions, include Universal Studios and Walt Disney World, making it one of the most attractive tourist areas in the world for families. Not only is it attractive because of the things it offers in entertainment, but the warm sun, attractive countryside, and employment opportunities also draw many people to the area, both to live and to visit.
